Before and after photos

A single before and after photo is worth more than a thousand words of marketing copy. It's visual proof that you deliver results. Yet most service businesses either don't take photos or take ones that don't do their work justice. Here's how to change that.

Why Before & After Photos Work

Before and after photos work because they tell a story instantly. A potential customer doesn't need to read your service description or understand your process—they can see the transformation with their own eyes. This builds trust faster than any other marketing tactic.

  • Posts with before/after photos get 3-5x more engagement on social media
  • Quotes that include project photos close at 40% higher rates
  • Google Business Profile posts with photos get 35% more clicks

The 5 Rules of Great Job Photos

Rule 1: Same Angle, Same Distance

The most common mistake is taking the before photo from one angle and the after photo from a completely different position. Stand in the exact same spot for both shots. Use a landmark (mailbox, fence post, tree) as your reference point.

Rule 2: Good Lighting

Natural light is your best friend. Take photos during the day, ideally in the morning or late afternoon when the light is warm and even. Avoid harsh midday shadows and never use flash for outdoor photos.

Rule 3: Clean the Frame

Before taking the "after" photo, make sure the work area is clean. Move equipment, trucks, and debris out of the frame. A clean, finished scene tells the customer "we leave your property better than we found it."

"We started requiring before/after photos on every job. Within three months, we had a library of 200+ photos that we use in quotes, social media, and our website. It's been our best marketing investment ever." — Chris A., Pinnacle Tree Care

Rule 4: Capture the Whole Scene

Don't just photograph the tree you removed—capture the whole yard. Show the customer's property looking beautiful. This wider perspective helps potential customers envision what you could do for their property.

Rule 5: Take More Than You Think You Need

Take 5-10 photos from different angles for both before and after. You can always delete extras, but you can't go back and retake photos after you've left the site. Include:

  • Wide shots of the full property
  • Medium shots of the specific work area
  • Close-ups of details (clean cuts, finished edges, etc.)
  • Your crew in action (with their permission)

Where to Use Your Photos

Once you have great photos, use them everywhere:

  • Google Business Profile: Post weekly with before/after comparisons
  • Social media: Side-by-side comparisons perform incredibly well
  • Quotes and proposals: Include photos of similar completed work
  • Your website: Create a portfolio or gallery page
  • Review responses: "Thanks for the great review! Here's a photo of the finished project"

Making It a Habit

The key is making photo-taking part of your standard job process, not an afterthought. Add it to your crew's job checklist:

  • Before starting: Take 3-5 "before" photos
  • During work: Capture 1-2 action shots
  • After cleanup: Take 3-5 "after" photos from the same angles
